Soon is Now inaugurates our first artist residency with an exhibition and public performance by Andrew Brehm and Jennifer Lauren Smith. Part of UPSTATE ART WEEKEND.
Smith will showcase a series of collaged cemetery flowers gathered in Green-wood Cemetery that reflects the irony of achieving longevity through artificiality. Contextualizing the prints, Smith will also present an artist's book of large format photographs captured while wandering amongst the hillocks and mausoleums of Green-wood with her young children.
Sculptor and performance artist Brehm salvages massive chunks of marine foam and other debris along the Hudson River to recycle into his work. Focused on cycles of use and re-use, Andrew will be utilizing the residency to build a large site-specific sculptural tableau with the processed foam, recycled paper pulp, and other found materials to create a dungeon-esque landscape of artificial stones.
Both artists share a commitment to transforming found materials into humorous works that contemplate the possibilities of stone, the future of the environment, and the quiet of the afterlife.
Reception: July 19, 5-6:30pm with a performance at 6:30pm in conjunction with the Goudy Wildlife Club.
The artists will offer a workshop for adults and families with kids ages 12 & up on July 12th from 10am-2pm. The workshop will include a river cleanup and search for materials followed by a presentation on techniques to create a sculpture with Andrew Brehm.
